Qatar's anonymous and forgotten spaces provide a contrasting visual environment to its new buildings, but one equally fruitful for photographers, as proven by the exhibits in this group. Shaikha Al-Hardan, for example, finds beauty in the ugliness of abandoned places, as seen in exposures made under the unusual lighting conditions at the ends of the day. Interest in the vestiges of an older architectural vernacular is also seen in works by several photographers who focus on the aesthetics of an archaeology of redundancy, decay and renewal.
