The Construction of Deconstructing Identity
Khalid Al Hammadi explores notions of identity and its relationship with the landscape, through sound, film and photography. He is the founder of Reconnecting Arts, a platform supporting Arab creativity regionally and internationally in exhibitions, workshops and publications.
Khalid's project reflects the personal relationship of the photographer with the ever-changing landscape in which he has grown up. In Qatar, landscape has a strong cultural force, as a central tool in the creation of national and social identity. By placing himself in the frame wearing the thobe, Khalid explores the way in which traditional dress is a surviving constant in a country in flux, and a form of resistance to change imposed from outside.
