Abeer Alkuwari is a multidisciplinary artist who uses both digital and analogue photography. She was the first woman to join the Qatar Photographic Society. Her work is research based and looks in particular at changing attitudes towards the role of fashion for Qatari women, through historic and contemporary sources.
In this series Abeer depicts women wearing the batoola (face mask): a form of hijab distinctive to the Gulf but now worn only by older generations. Mixing past and present, her heroines are portrayed in settings that challenge viewers to reassess their assumptions about traditional forms of dress and that emphasize the creative independence of women who chose to wear it.
