The Colour Red and Identity
Adriane Ferreira was born in Duque de Caxias, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Photography for her is very personal: a means of becoming closer to the true self and of expressing ideas and feelings that might otherwise remain internalized. She eschews complex equipment, preferring the simplicity of a phone camera.
Adriane's use of a shawl to cover the face of her sitter in The Colour Red and Identity signals not only the ambiguity of who we really are and how we are seen, but also the tension of our own self- confidence in projecting ourselves. The inclusion of strong red is a signal of, and aid to addressing, the involuntary mystery of the depth and warmth we harbour but are often afraid of displaying.
