Alone – Museum of Islamic Art; La Espera (Waiting)
Juan Miguel Ramirez (aka Ícaro) was born in Cuernavaca, Mexico. He has been living in Qatar for 12 years, working as an architect, interior designer and photographer. He is a member of the International Artists of Doha and the G7 Latin American artists in Qatar groups.
Juan re-creates well-known sights in Doha out of everyday items, including cardboard boxes and watermelons, which he eats after photographing them. Waiting references the time spent by Qatari families in former ages waiting for men to come back from sea. The watermelons represent dhows, the traditional fishing and pearling vessels of the region. Juan's long exposures are illuminated by LEDs and lasers.
