Manege central exhibition hall (St. Petersburg) in collaboration with RuArts Foundation (Moscow) presents a large-scale exhibition project of Alex Partola Wall Elements.
Wall Elements is the first large-scale research of the Russian graffiti and street art scene from Kaliningrad to Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky, a bold attempt to bring together the works of the most notable street artists, who are completely unlike one another, and who draw both illegally as well as in legal places; to capture their approaches and methods of working on the street. The project is based on the study of the urban environment and street culture in each of the Russian cities involved.
Only Russian artists with a “street background” take part in the project: a total of 70 artists from 17 Russian cities. The goal of the project’s creator is to show a cross-section of Russian street art and to present the works of artists who have extensive experience of working on the street and collaborating with galleries and museums. Amongst the artists there are those who are just starting to emerge on the scene, those whose names are well known, painters of the largest murals in the world, as well as participants of international street art biennales, major festivals and exhibitions. Even when they gain commercial success, they do not leave the street, and thus continue to shape the visual culture of their cities.
For the Wall Elements project, each participant chooses a form of self-expression that best represents what they consider to be most relevant to them at the moment – the artists have no limitations in creating their work, and create it using any technique and in accordance with their own personal views on art and culture. The project will include more than 100 works: sculptures, paintings, drawings, installations, photography (including a photo series by Alex Partola), and will occupy all of the interior of Manege and the square by the western fa?ade, where a large-scale graffiti jam involving 15 project’s artists is planned to take place. An educational programme comprising of lectures and discussions with the curator and participants of the project is also planned.
For Manege, Wall Elements will be the second instalment of the New Ruins street art project. The first instalment was staged in the square by the western face of Manege and took place in 2017.
