The piece Niwakhith (translated as "The captains of the sailing boats") focuses on a part of Qatari tradition and folklore — the journey of pearl diving and the hardships people encountered in the past, while they ventured on these long voyages.
The installation is of a collection of paper dhows (traditional sailing boats) suspended from the ceiling, emulating the movement of the dhow in the sea. The ink markings on the paper are reflecting the sound waves of the voices traveling through the waters. These elements merge to create a poetic harmony that sheds light on the strenuous journey experienced by the divers themselves, and how the songs sung on their journey kept the motivation high during difficult times.
The artist utilizes specific modes of expression that are deeply connected to her artistic process. Her creative aesthetic is raw and displays an unrefined feel. Fingerprints and smudges are all important elements in each piece as they are what create identity and irregularity. Each piece contains its own uniqueness that the artist hand makes – rendering her whole installation an original artwork.
