SOUNDART: The Space of the Sound is part of PROTOART improv art festival and shows the way sound art develops in various genres and cases.
Sound art is a young area that combines academic, popular and alternative music, sound poetry and sound sculpture and gives all of them a totally new quality with the help latest achievements of science and technology.
This exhibition tells us about the nature of sound and hearing. It also addresses acoustics – a whole science that studies sound and the way people deal with it, as well as the role this science played in forming a new area of art in the 20th century. The main stages of this process are displayed in the special video program prepared for the festival.
Over several centuries, art hasn't been completely devoid of scientific approach. Starting in the Renaissance, artists have been studying natural science: chemistry, biology and anatomy. It helped them with recipes for paints and made their works more realistic. Same way, a contemporary sound artist must know his or her way around a whole range of disciplines: study of instruments, acoustics and electric acoustics, software and circuit engineering, perceptual psychology and instrumentation.
The gallery of sound objects and installations offers works that only prove their creators' professional skill set. Visitors will be able to learn basic principles for the so called graphical sound formation and try their hand in creating spatial sound pieces, as well as playing unconventional musical instruments or grasping elements of electroacoustic music in musical pieces by robotic.
