An experimental film portrait by Pierre Coulibeuf that transposes the research of choreographer Meg Stuart into fiction.
The film re-creates the behaviours and gestures of individuals in everyday life: the strange or unusual attitudes of a couple of unconventional figures, of two girls in their flat, of a couple in a half-destroyed house, of a girl in an underground parking garage, of another girl who wants to settle in Switzerland and live more or less traumatic experiences... These characters are also the material of research that is both choreographic and cinematic. The title, Somewhere in between, intends to suggest the idea of vagueness: that of places; of the identity of the film’s protagonist as well as the other participants; of situations or relationships between all the individuals who move in the film. Vagueness is just as constitutive of Meg Stuart’s choreographic work as it is of Pierre Coulibeuf's films, affecting the entire reality of a film that perches on the boundary of humour and gravity. The choreographer’s imaginations inspired Pierre Coulibeuf to create a discontinuous film tale, like a mental projection.
BIOGRAPHICAL NOTE
Avant-garde filmmaker and visual artist, Pierre Coulibeuf develops a cross-disciplinary project: he makes experimental fictions that skilfully invest the sphere of art and in which changes of identity affect the universes and artists inspiring his works. His films, shot on Super 16 or 35mm, are shown in cinemas as well as, recomposed, in the form of installations in the contemporary art network. Coulibeuf’s works are part of major public collections in the world.
