Visitors to Manage will be able to enjoy a special screening of Varda by Agnès as part of the Manege Documentary programme. The event will also feature a talk by director Didier Rouget.
Varda by Agnès takes the viewer on a two-hour journey through the incredible world of Agnès Varda, a director and pioneer of the French New Wave. She speaks about her friendship with the actor Jane Birkin and artist JR, about the principles that guided the creation of her films, and about her love for those around her. In February 2019, Varda presented the film at the Berlin International Film Festival (out of competition), before passing away the following month at the age of 90.
“In 1994 I published a book entitled Varda by Agnès. Twenty-five years on, the same title has been given to my film, in which the moving images and words are brought together by the same idea: to provide a key to understanding my work. I offer my commentary, and share my thoughts. It is nothing special – I merely explain,” said Varda about the film.
After the film, a public talk will be given by co-director Didier Rouget, who knew Varda well. His previous work includes a vast array of documentaries and TV films. Varda by Agnès (running time: 115 mins) will be screened in the original French with Russian subtitles. The subsequent talk by Didier Rouget will be in French with simultaneous interpretation.
Admission is free by advance registration. The number of spaces is strictly limited.
