In 2017, the centennial year of the October Revolution, Cai came to present his exhibition Cai Guo-Qiang. October in Pushkin Museum of Fine Arts in Moscow. The film shows how Cai Guo-Qiang was making his pieces in public, inviting the audience to become witnesses and participants of the creative process. October: the Unrealized Century is a more than just a story about building an exhibition. Director of the film analyzes the art of Cai Guo-Qiang, as well as of Konstantin Maksimov, a Soviet artist and teacher who had profound impact on China’s artistic culture of the 20th century. Shanshan Xia tells a story of relations between Chinese and Russian artists of the last decades. It’s an open and sincere narration of artistic heritage and changes in the artistic approaches used by artists at the turn of the century.
