On September 11, Manege hosted a lecture by Mikhail Gelfand, entitled “Medicine and evolution”.
Most people are used to thinking of evolutionary biology as a theoretical science about the distant past. In fact, evolutionary ideas are extremely important for modern medicine: without them we would not be able to understand how the immune system works, how cancerous tumors develop, how drug resistance comes about, or, of course, the progress of the coronavirus infection. This was the theme of the lecture.
Speaker Mikhail Gelfand is a doctor of biology, professor, member of the Academia Europaea, and vice president for biomedical research at the Skolkovo institute of Science and Technology.
