Future Lab. Kinetic Art in Russia is a massive exhibition project and a unique investigation of the development of kinetic art in Russia.
The exhibition, first shown at Manege in 2020, gathers together approximately 500 works by kinetic artists in a retrospective covering 100 years of one of the most significant and at the same time least studied movements in Russian art. This year, the project continues its life at the State Tretyakov Gallery.
The architecture of the Western Wing of the Tretyakov Gallery has opened up new possibilities for exhibition design, thanks to which this exhibition is able to unite more large-scale objects and installations, there are special video rooms, and the list of included artists has been expanded. Kinetic art and the architectural design of the building on Krymsky Val were conceived at almost the same time, which creates a deep historical and aesthetic connection between them.
The new exhibition space has been able to accommodate large kinetic art objects – the Letatlin homage by Ivan Shchetinin, Kirill Aleksandrov’s Dialogue, Sergey Filatov’s Garden of Elusive Sonors, Vyacheslav Koleichuk’s life-size Ball, and works by German Vinogradov, Francisco Infante-Arana, and Dmitry Morozov. The exhibition on Krymsky Val also includes work by contemporary artists working in media ranging from videoart to paintings and installations who work with the kinetic idea of transformation and movement – Stas Shuripa, Mikhail Grishin, Kuda begut sobaki Group, Asya Koroleva, and Maksim Ksuta.
A catalogue has been published to accompany the exhibition in Moscow – Kinetic Art in Russia, which includes the artworks from both exhibitions and which will surely become somewhat of an encyclopaedia of kinetic art in Russia. The publication will be of interest to everyone who wishes to immerse themselves in the world of the art of effects and illusions, learn a new aesthetics whose goals are movement and experiment, and unify the rational and emotional approaches to perceiving the world.
The catalogue Kinetic Art in Russia is published by the Autonomous Non-commercial Organisation “Independent Artists” (ANO “IA”), with support from the Admiral Logistics Group. You can purchase the catalogue at Manege’s bookshop.
