Manege Central Exhibition Hall continues its series of outdoor installations for New Year’s. Artist Asya Marakulina will undertake the project in 2021. Her installation Everyone Wants to Know is a New Year’s tree decorated with shining, colourful question marks. The project is an attempt to make sense ofthe new reality and the state of uncertainty in which we have found ourselves for quite a long time now.
The installation Everyone Wants to Know is not a provocative outcry for a pointed search for answers, but an attempt to shift the focus to contemplation. A state of continual decision-making and constant doubt is the new reality that the author challenges us to come to terms with. At times the questions one asks oneself only give rise to more questions, and at times the questions become more important than the answers. In the new year, the Manege team invites everyone to ask themselves the most important question.
After Everyone Wants to Know leaves the square behind Manege (on January 23rd), Asya Marakulina’s installation will continue its existence, but in a new fashion: some of the question marks will be sent to Uppsala Circus, and others to the Prostye Veshchi inclusive studios, to become part of the future social cluster Normalnoye Mesto.
Every year, as part of the Museum Line public art program, the Manege team invites contemporary artists to create outdoor installations with the goal of not only personally wishing the residents and guests of St. Petersburg happy holidays, but also providing them with another opportunity to familiarize themselves with the world of contemporary art.
