On April 8, Manege hosted another Breakfast in Manege – another meeting designed for culture and art professionals to interact and share experience. This time we welcomed Erika Hoffman, a German art historian and collector. Together with her husband Rolf, Erika made a significant impact on contemporary art in Europe. They opened Sammlung Hoffman, a private collection of 20th and 21st century art displayed at a former factory in Mitte, an area in Berlin. They also helped organize a number of exhibitions in the National Gallery in Berlin, in Museum of Modern Art in New York and other art institutions. As of today, Sammlung Hoffman is one of the most prestigious private collections of contemporary art in Europe. It includes works by Andy Warhol, Isa Genzken, Lucio Fontana, Gerhard Richter, Wolfgang Tillmans, Pipilotti, Jorinde Voigt, Olga Chernysheva and many others. At the meeting, Ms. Hoffman told about her collection, her meetings with other artists, curators and member of the international art community, as well as thematic exhibitions she’d been hosting in her private house since 1997. Works are presented to the visitors in the associative manner (once a week by appointment). Art pieces are part of a private home interior and do not have any recaps, which helps guests get a more emotional art experience. Once a year, Erika Hoffman rearranges the collection stored in her house. Some works are taken to a storage facility, others become part of the display. All of it contributes to new relations between art works, new contexts and potential interpretations.
