On 30 January, Manege hosted a breakfast with the creators of the publication “Collection of Knowledge: Museums and Collections of the St. Petersburg State University”.
The editor-in-chief of the Hermitage Magazine, Zorina Myskova, and graphic designer and designer of the publication, Igor Gurovich, discussed the phenomenon of one of the largest but least known public collections in Saint Petersburg--that of the St. Petersburg State University. Their collection developed throughout the history of the university, since its founding in 1724, and is now comprised of more than 3 million pieces of various subjects and themes. Among them are unique books and manuscripts, extensive bioresources and geological collections, memorial and historical collections, and works of art spanning the XVIII-XXI centuries. The oldest pieces in the museum date back 200 million years, whereas the youngest are less than a year old.
The creators of the publication, “Collection of Knowledge”, talked about how the idea for it came about, what it is made up of, and what is happening with the university collection today. Furthermore they covered why and how to interpret scientific collections through a contemporary artistic lense.
Thank you to Friends of Manege for their support of “Breakfasts at Manege”.
