How can you “read” a work of modern art? Can modern art be conceptualised as a precise language with its own distinctive vocabulary, grammar and phraseology? Can its form act as a clear reference to its content? A modern artist not only employs colour and sound, they also borrow from previous eras. Is it important to have an understanding of these references in advance? Classical subjects and comprehensible images can give way to the blots of tachism, the brush-strokes of neo-expressionism, or indeed, entire pre-conceived emotional states in which the creators of these environments immerse the viewer. What is it that makes us love or reject modern art? What is it about specific details that serves to infuriate or fascinate us?
Admission is free by advance registration. The number of spaces is limited.
Visitors are recommended to view the AES+F. Predictions and Revelations exhibition before the lecture.
